Grace Hickling of the National History Society of Northumbria is a local wildlife expert and the author of Birds: Ancient and ModernOne of Europes most important seabird sanctuaries the islands are home to more than 20 different species including puffins eider ducks and four species of tern. Many of the birds are extremely confiding and visitors can enjoy close views. There is also a large colony of Atlantic grey seals. They have been here for at least 800 years and the colony is one of the most important in Britain.
