Yoshitoshis works from the 1860s were mostly mushae (warrior prints) often with mythological elements and drawn from Japanese military history. Yoshitoshis major mushae series in terms of both scope and dynamic visual experimentation remains Kaidai hyaku senso or 100 Dogs of War. Yoshitoshi was reputedly driven to create this series in 1868 after witnessing the bloody Battle of Ueno in the civil war in Japan.
