His research interests include the poetics of the Hebrew psalms the theology of the Psalter the biblical wisdom psalms and lament songs. It has been hard to categorise and identify the śWisdom psalms within the Psalter. Interpreters have produced different lists of wisdom psalms of greatly varying lengths and individual scholars often change their choices over time. Cheung reexamines the issues at stake in identifying this group of psalms in order to better describe the configuration of this psalmic genre. Past scholarship has failed to settle this issue because of the use of unfit criteria and an illunderstood concept of genre. With the aid of the concepts of śfamily resemblance and śprototypes this book proposes to define świsdom psalms as a psalm family which is characterised by a wisdomoriented constellation of its generic features. Three such features are identified after a fresh assessment of the most typical characteristics of świsdom literature. This proposed method is put to test in the extensive study of seven psalms (37 49 73 128 32 39 and 19) and the three criteria are verified to be suitable descriptors of the świsdom psalm family. Cheung also explores questions related to the wisdomcult disparity Joban parallels as wisdom indicators and the wisdomorientation of śtorah psalms.Chapter One Classifying świsdom psalmsChapter Two The Salient Wisdom Features Chapter Three Psalm 37: The ABCs of living in the land Chapter Four Psalm 49: The Riddle of Death Chapter Five Psalm 73: Crossing the Boundary Chapter Six śWisdom in the Fringe (I): Two Cultic Psalms Chapter Seven śWisdom in the Fringe (II): A Joban and a Torah Psalm Chapter Eight: Conclusion Appendix: śWisdom Psalms Lists Bibliography
